The top 2015 hair trends with Oscar Oscar Salons, Michael Kelly

You know what they say, a hair change is as good as a holiday. Well ok so that’s probably stretching the imagination slightly, but hey it’s winter and we kinda need that right now.

In the world of hair cuts, it seems going the chop is still in vogue, but if you’re not up for an extreme change, then colour is the way to go.

Michael Kelly is the National Colour Educator for Oscar Oscar Salons and a bona fide hair genius. His talent for tresses are sought after by the who’s who of the Sydney style set including Vogue contributor and fashion blogger, Carmen Hamilton, Elle Ferguson of They All Hate Us fame and TV host Carissa Walford.

His Hair Colour Trends SS13/14 report for Vitality blog is easily our most popular post and with good reason, just look at those vibrant copper locks? Lustworthy.

5Trend #1 >> Californian Caramel

How would you describe this colour? is it dark blonde or light brown?

It’s actually a medium blonde with a iridescent gold undertone. Think earthy natural cool golds.

Can anyone go this colour?

Because it is a balance of warm and cool, this is a very versatile base colour to have, women of all skin tones and natural hair hues can hold this colour.

How do you achieve this look in the salon?

This look can be achieved by applying a medium blonde with a cool golden reflect globally, micro lighting flecks of a creamy light blonde hue and then lengthening out with some soft seamless balayage.

Who works the look best?

Natalia Vodianova

Trend #2 >> Titian Blondes

Where does the name come from?

Titian was an Italian artist from the 16th century who had a fascination with painting women with red and strawberry-coloured hair.

Does this require an all over colour?

Yes! It works best as an all over global colour. But, if you struggle to commit and want to give it a whirl without going the full monty, then you can add aspects of it to your existing blonde hair by using the colour as a reference for your mid-lights.

Is it best for blondes? Not recommended for darker hair?

You will achieve softer and more natural looking strawberry hues if you start as a natural blonde. Any darker and you will start to expose the natural red and orange undertones.

Who wears it best?

This colour was once only considered for women of pale complexions, but more recently we have seen a lot of olive and soft golden sun kissed complexions on celebrities like Sienna Miller and Kate Bosworth.

Trend #3 >> Oxblood Red120302_Christina_0194_WEB

Is this a flat colour or are there highlights?

This is a solid colour with intense reflect, there are no highlights or variation but because the tone is incredibly intense, if the light hits this merlot ruby colour then you will see shine lines of dimensional red hues.

Who shouldn’t go this colour? or does it suit everyone?

This should be a colour chosen by those who want to be bold. Ideally it will suit pale and slightly cooler complexions.

OSCAR_CULLINAN_05Trend #4 >> Mahogany / Truffle Brunette

Is this the new balyage?

No, its the new brunette!

Is this a good variation for brunettes wanting a subtle change?

Yes, exactly, its a great way to enhance shine and hue without going too red or brassy with your brunette. Ask for a cadbury chocolate brunette with a velvety undertone.

How do you achieve it? what’s involved in the salon?

Ask your colourist for a mahogany base colour with some slight variations of maple and golden syrup.

Why is it such a great colour?

It’s high in shine, it’s not too bold and it’s less likely to fade to red and mahogany has a natural undertone of brown and violet.
