She has the face of a desert flower, a delicate and rare beauty but beneath the pretty exterior there’s a strong sense of character and an enduring spirit. That’s Chloe Sargeant, SO much more than just a pretty face.
I first met Chloe at Australian Fashion Week during my time as Fashion Editor at the GCB. This is one girl who’s personality reaches far beyond her obvious beauty. When she’s stressed, dancing to Nicki Minaj calms her down and punk is the music of choice when she’s angry. (Definitely trying this when my stress levels blow out next time!)
She also has legs for days and a signature look that fuses genres, styles and colour with aplomb. It’s enviable. And when she’s not modelling she’s writing with plans for a book this year.
It’s been a while between convo’s with miss Chloe – well you know, life gets busy – so when we stumbled on her pretty face in a fake-freckle feature for new beauty site, The File, we got in touch and this is what transpired…
Music is… a release. I dance in my room to Nicki Minaj when I’m stressed, and listen to punk music when I’m angry.
I’m at my best when… I’m on a shoot, or writing. They are the two things I’m passionate about.
Women are… the best, and we need to realise that. We tear each other down a lot, and that makes me sad to witness. We are completely amazing, and equality needs to be established and we need to realise just how badass and excellent we really are.
I want to tell my older self… that I was an idiot for stressing about my future when I was young. I hope that happens!
The person I admire most is… Patty Huntington and Clementine Ford. They are wonderful writers, excellent journalists, and have the integrity of no other person I’ve ever encountered. I’ve never met either of them, I hope I do someday. They can do no wrong in my eyes.
I was scouted by… Karen Bava from Parlour Hair in Adelaide. She is now my second mother, she’s been there for me from day one and is an eternal inspiration to me.
Health is… a very difficult topic, and I’ve learned slowly that just because something is right for one person, it doesn’t mean it is for everyone. You have to find your own path to health.
My current obsession is… the oysters at Longrain, movies that won Oscars in the 90’s, and matte lip colour.
My favourite childhood memory is… I don’t have that many to be honest. Probably going to see The Cure with my dad and aunty when I was 14.
My first kiss was… absolutely crap. I remember thinking, ‘If that’s what it’s like, books need to stop fucking romanticising it.’
On a photoshoot I’m thinking about… how I could make this photoshoot different to anything I’ve ever seen before.
When I see myself in a photoshoot I… send the tear sheets to my mum, haha. No, it’s cool seeing myself in magazines. But I can’t watch myself on video, like in behind the scenes videos – I think I look like such an idiot, even if the photos look great. It’s like watching yourself become another person.
My favourite fashion people are… Rei Kawakubo. There is no one else for me, she is my be-all and end-all.
Fashion is… funny. I love it to pieces, and I hope my path leads me to a job in fashion somehow.
My wardrobe consists of… almost all black pieces, and I wear the same ones constantly.
2015 will be the year I… write a book.
I never thought I would… ever be in an international campaign. But I did a few years ago.
The craziest thing I have ever done is… break out of a hotel on an international exchange to go experience street food in the slums of China. Our teachers wouldn’t let us go in there during the day, but I wanted to experience something real, something human; I didn’t want tourist bullshit. I ended up eating street food with three locals chain-smoking at their stall. They spoke a little bit of English and told me about their daughters, one of whom was sold into sex slavery. He cried telling me the story, but said that ‘he could see from my face that [he could] trust me with his feelings’, and we hugged when I left.
In my lifetime I want to achieve… happiness and a long career that I love.
I look up to… my mother. She is the most amazing person in the world.
My future looks like… ?????????. I’ve never been good at planning.
